The Ultimate Guide to Sun Safe Packing for the Cottage
Sun, fun, and... sunburn? No thanks! 🌞 Heading to the cottage is all about making memories—not dealing with sun damage or swim safety scares. Here’s everything you need to pack to keep your family protected while enjoying long summer days at the lake.
1. Sun Protection Essentials
The sun doesn’t take breaks, and neither should your sun protection! Make sure to pack:
- UPF 50+ Swimwear – Keeps skin protected with less need for sunscreen (plus, high-quality suits last for years - we've got the whole family covered!)
- Wide-Brim Hats & Sunglasses – Shield faces, ears, and eyes from harmful UV rays
- Reef-Safe Sunscreen (SPF 30+ or higher) – For any exposed skin (reapply every 2 hours!). Look for Broad Spectrum coverage to protect from both UVA and UVB rays
- Portable Shade (Umbrellas or Pop-Up Tents) – A must for hot, sunny days
2. Swim & Water Safety Gear
Whether you’re boating, swimming, or just hanging out by the dock, safety first!
- Coast Guard-Approved Life Jackets – A must-have for kids (and adults!) near water
- High-Visibility Swimwear – The easiest way to keep eyes on little swimmers in the lake and pool - see my swim safety/hi-vis blog for more on this!
- Water Shoes – Protects feet from hot surfaces, sharp rocks, and slippery docks. Crocs are my favourite for the kids!
- Quick-Dry Towels & Extra set of UPF 50+ clothing – Because kids are always getting wet!
3. Hydration & Cooling Must-Haves
It’s easy to forget about hydration while having fun. Pack these to stay cool and hydrated:
- Reusable Water Bottles – Fill up and sip all day - I personally like Yeti because you can bring the big jug and refill everyone's water as needed.
- Sea Salt – Okay, I'm no professional, however a pinch of sea salt (I'm talking a tiny pinch - and not table salt!) in your water bottle helps replace lost minerals after swimming and sweating.
4. First Aid & Skin Care
Even with the best precautions, sometimes the sun wins. Be prepared with:
- Aloe Vera Gel & After-Sun Lotion – Soothes accidental sun exposure. I have an aloe plant that I use as needed.
- Bug Spray – Because mosquitoes and black flies love cottage season
- SPF Lip Balm – Lips can burn too! I like the Attitude brand.
