How To Stay Cool In A Heat Wave
It's mid-summer and we've got the heat and humidity here in Ontario, Canada. Everyone can get a little testy when we are in a heat wave. So here's a few activities to do with the kids to keep everyone cool and calm.
1. Water balloons - have a fight, play, if you have a trampoline play with them on there!
2. Sprinkler and slip n' slide are always easy ways to have fun and seems to keep all kids entertained for hours
3. Drink lots of water, eat popsicles and freezies (my personal favourite are pedialyte to give them a little more than just sugar).
4. Find a local beach or splash pad.
5. Stay indoors between the hours of 10am and 4pm when the sun is the highest and it's the hottest outside. Since this option doesn't help with burning energy see steps 1-4 instead :)
6. Go for a swim or hang out in the sprinkler before bed to get a great sleep.
To avoid heat stroke and heat exhaustion make sure to keep everyone's core temperatures down with cool water, shade and low exertion activities. We only installed A/C a few years ago and I found ceiling fans and a swim before bed made nights much more comfortable. Now, even with A/C we keep it between 76-77 degrees so the temperature changes aren't so drastic (and it's a little easier on the environment).
Hope you enjoy and stay cool!
Cheers,
Jen
